Built By Athens
for Athens
The Athens Rock Lobsters were never meant to be just another hockey team. From the very beginning, the vision was bigger; create something that felt authentically rooted in the culture, energy, and identity of Athens, GA.
When the franchise was established in November 2023, it operated under the temporary name Athens Pro Hockey. It was a placeholder by design; because the real name wasn’t going to come from ownership or a marketing room. It was going to come from the city itself.
In early 2024, that belief sparked a bold, community-first approach. Instead of unveiling a pre-selected identity, the organization launched a citywide naming initiative, inviting Athens to take part in shaping its newest team. What followed was something far greater than a campaign; it became a movement. Over the course of just a few weeks, more than 9,000 name submissions and 800 artwork concepts poured in from fans, families, students, and local creatives, each one reflecting a different piece of what makes Athens special.
As the process narrowed, five finalists emerged—each representing a unique angle of the city’s personality. From there, the final decision came down to two names: Classic City Panic (a nod to Widespread Panic) and Athens Rock Lobsters (inspired by The B-52s). Both were strong. Both were rooted in Athens. But one would ultimately capture something deeper.
That defining moment came when the actual The B-52s (the legendary Athens-born group behind the global hit “Rock Lobster”) publicly embraced the name. Their support, alongside their label, helped propel the identity into something bigger than a vote. It became a cultural alignment. A connection between sport and sound. Between past and present. But a name is only the beginning.
Behind the scenes, Ghost Brands took that momentum and built the Athens Rock Lobsters brand from the ground up; transforming a community-chosen name into a fully realized identity. From the development of the primary logo and visual system to the tone, voice, and storytelling that would define the organization, every element was crafted to reflect Athens in a way that felt bold, original, and unmistakably local.
That work extended far beyond design. It sparked the creation of the now-signature #ClawsUp rallying cry; a simple, powerful call-to-action that quickly became synonymous with game nights, celebrations, and the attitude of the team. It also helped define and energize the fan base now known as the Crustacean Nation, a passionate and growing community that embodies the spirit, loyalty, and personality of Athens itself.
The name “Rock Lobsters” isn’t just a reference; it’s a reflection of what Athens represents. This is a city known for shaping music history, with artists like R.E.M. and Widespread Panic rising from its stages and scenes, and iconic venues like the 40 Watt Club serving as the heartbeat of its creative culture. That same spirit of originality, grit, and expression now carries onto the ice.
Today, the Athens Rock Lobsters stand as more than a team; they are a symbol of what can happen when a community is invited to build something together. Every game, every moment, and every memory is grounded in that same philosophy: this isn’t just hockey in Athens; it’s hockey that belongs to Athens.
Because from day one, this was never just about a name. It was about building something the city could believe in and bringing it to life in a way that would last.
