Our League

The SPHL

The Athens Rock Lobsters proudly compete in the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL); a league built on grit, passion, and the kind of high-energy hockey that brings communities together across the Southeast and Midwest.

Founded in 2004, the SPHL has grown into one of the premier minor professional hockey leagues in the United States, with teams spanning cities that share a common thread: loyal fan bases, strong local identity, and a love for the game. From opening puck drop to the final horn, the SPHL delivers a fast-paced, physical style of hockey that emphasizes both competition and entertainment, making every night at the rink an experience.

What sets the SPHL apart is its connection to the communities it represents. Each franchise is deeply embedded in its city, creating an atmosphere where players, fans, and organizations are closely tied. It’s a league where accessibility meets intensity; where fans are close to the action, players are within reach, and every game carries meaning.

The SPHL also serves as an important step in the professional hockey pipeline, providing opportunities for players, coaches, and staff to develop and advance within the sport. Many have gone on to higher leagues, while others have built lasting careers and legacies within the SPHL itself. That balance of ambition and authenticity defines the league’s character.

For the Athens Rock Lobsters, joining the SPHL represents more than just competition; it’s alignment. Alignment with a league that values community, embraces personality, and understands that hockey is at its best when it’s played with heart and supported by the people who make each city unique.

Because in the SPHL, it’s not just about where you play.

It’s about who you play for.
